Buncombe Beginnings: Buncombe County, NC through 1806
This video was written especially for Western North Carolina. It explores the forces that brought the Germans and Scots-Irish from Europe to this area and visually tells what they went through to get here -- Indian wars, Revolution, hard work, etc. from 1700 to 1806.
Every head of household from the 1790 census of this area is listed here, with credit given those unsung heroes -- the women, children and the 73 persons listed as slaves -- who also played a huge role in developing Western North Carolina.
Whether your family was here in 1790 or came along a little later, this video shows what it took to get from the Atlantic seaboard up to these mountains. As the Cherokee Indians were pushed ever westward, it was the thin edge of the wedge to open the land for the Louisiana Purchase that doubled the size of the country.
This fast-moving video holds the attention of 8 year olds on up, setting the stage for every development of this country's westward expansion.
Written by Doris Cline Ward and directed by Jacqueline Ward Britton, this video is available as a DVD from The Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society at www.obcgs.com.

Unconnected Lines: send your lineage chart as far back as you can go and let's see if we can help. Include the approximate era --time frame-- for your person must have lived, and the county and state associated with him/her if at all possible. This will give clues as to what census records to search -- remember that personal records are found in county records. You have to identify counties and states, even when you start researching in archives.
For 19th and 20th century immigrants: check with the Immigration Department (your local public library should be able to give you addresses). Applications for Citizenship should give details of prior country and residences. Don't forget Social Security Records from 1937.
